[VAW] Dog Fighting in Hanoi, Vietnam

Right, in Vietnam - a country where dog meat and cat meat are norms and acceptable by most - dog fighting shouldn't have come as a surprise to me. However, I have to say, seeing the photos of poor doggies in painful and horrific conditions breaks my heart and makes me furious to see how some Vietnamese treat animals.

LONDON CALLING!!!

London is, without a doubt, one of my favourite cities in this whole wide world! Plenty of fond memories were made there. A great deal of my precious money were spent as well EEK! (on food and shopping obviously haha) But was it worth it? Hell yes.

Since I visited London so many times, there will be too many things to put into one post. I'm going to split it up somehow, thus maybe two posts. Topics: vegan food (DUH!) and some other little things I did in this crazy yet charming city.

All I've been thinking about lately is just to visit the UK, go to London, and see my friends. Therefore, this first post, however, will be about things I did in London - obviously, only the highlights. I'm not gonna torture your guys with all the trivia hehe

What about vegan food? Not this post. Sorry haha :P You can stop reading. It's entirely up to you ;)

Let's begin, shall we? Down that memory lane of mine hehe

Opinions: What's Going On, Lanta Animal Welfare?!

Right, so Jojo - or you may know her better as Vegan in Brighton - just finished her one-month volunteering at Lanta Animal Welfare (LAW) just a couple of days ago, and her blog post about her experience at LAW was something completely unexpected to me as a former volunteer of the shelter.

Let's just say, "shocked" is an understatement for my feeling after having read her post.

Vegan in Ho Chi Minh City: Prem Bistro & Café

*UPDATE (8th Feb 2017): New address was added

I love vegan-friendly restaurants. Well, don't all vegans? Haha. Of course, the most important thing when it comes to a restaurant is its food. Then, there are also the setting, the decoration and the atmosphere there.

Prem Bistro & Café has got me put a "check" on all those criteria ;)

Vegan Eats in Brighton

My laptop decided to die on me not long ago and I was so afraid that all my data would just disappear into thin air, in other words, I would lose all photos of delicious to blog about. Fortunately, my laptop was fixed FOR FREE (thank you Apple service! though I have no idea how I'm still valid for free service because I must have had my laptop for about 3 years now hehe). Anyhow, everything - photos all data - is still intact, so here's a new blog post to celebrate.

That and the fact that I miss England, hence this post happens ha!

Let's talk about Brighton this time, shall we?

[VAW] A Human Monster Has Surfaced

I'm not sure how to even begin this post because I'm still shocked from the news I read this morning. No matter how upset I am right now, I feel that I need to share this story to bring justice to all the poor creatures being murdered so cruelly.

[VAW] *28/08* Update on Lucky

I'm going to write individual update posts about Lucky from now on because I think it's a bit inconvenient for you guys to have to keep going back to my original post. Moreover, by uploading more posts on Lucky, I hope more people will read her story.

If you are curious about Lucky's rescue story, please read this post first.

Opinions: What Is the "Right" Reason To Be Vegan Anyway?

"Why did you go vegan?" This question is anything, but strange and unfamiliar to vegans. There are various reasons for one to choose to be vegan.

However, what is the deal with vegans arguing with each other over which is the "legit" or "right" reason?

Vegan in Ho Chi Minh City: ... hum

You're probably wondering what the heck is ... hum, right? Well, it's the name of a vegetarian restaurant.

Why 'hum'? I think it's the same as 'om' for meditation.

This vegetarian restaurant has two branches. The one I've been to and is featured in this post is ... hum Lounge & Restaurant locating on Thi Sách St.

*UPDATE (27/07)* [VAW] Dog rescue: Similar Case to Lucky but in Hanoi

More Vietnam Animal Welfare news.

Yesterday while I was reading about Lucky on Facebook, I saw people share a post saying that they saw a dog with mouth being taped shut in Hanoi. This is probably another case of escaping from the dog meat trade. I read that dog thieves and people in dog meat trade often tape the dogs mouths shut to keep them from biting and barking.

[WARNING: This post contains disturbing and upsetting images though I do hope you will continue reading to know and understand the truth]

*UPDATE (21/08)* [VAW] Dog Rescue: 'Lucky'

VAW = Vietnam Animal Welfare

It is for certain that there is no official law regarding animal welfare in Vietnam, which of course, maybe in the future this will no longer be case (read more) However, all is not lost since in recent years, there have been some animal shelters and/or rescue centre run by animal lovers popping up in main cities of Vietnam, such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).

I didn't even know they existed till recently, particularly since I rarely use Facebook (the only reason I keep my facebook is to use its Messenger), which is the main social network these rescue centres use. Therefore, from now on, I will check their pages more regularly to update news about rescue on my blog. Links to their Facebook pages can be found at the end of this post. However, since most of the time, their posts are in Vietnamese, so I'll be the middle man to summarise what is happening to you.

This post is first of VAW news.

[WARNING: this post contains disturbing images, but to learn the truth, I hope you will continue reading]

Opinions: Yulin Dog Meat Festival

Another Yulin Dog Meat festival has come and gone. It is a horrible event, isn't it? It involves the slaughtering of thousands of dogs, many of which are stolen. It's a 'festival' which only started in 2010.

This 'festival' has garnered a lot of attention worldwide this recent years - medias publishing articles after articles about it; celebrities asking the Chinese authorities to put a stop to this event; and thousands of people signing petitions and condemning Yulin Dog Meat festival. And it's all well and good because there is absolutely nothing to like about this so-called 'festival' - the word 'festival' being stick to this event makes me sick.

However, I'd like to voice my opinions about a few things.

I'm currently in Hồ Chí Minh City (HCMC) - or Sài Gòn, however you want to call it - for an internship. Therefore, it's an opportunity to explore vegan food here and share it with you guys. YES, vegan food is way more important than work.

This post contains a very important tip/warning ;)

2014 Volunteer - Second Stop: Thailand

Where at: Lanta Animal Welfare in Koh Lanta, Thailand

After I volunteered in September 2014 in South Africa, I'm not going to lie, I was a bit reluctant about volunteering in Thailand. Why? The reason was that I was sick of having to meet someone like that rude manager I met at the centre I volunteered in South Africa. Of course, I still went because it would have been selfish of me if I had not come at all despite having already booked with Lanta Animal Welfare centre in Koh Lanta, Thailand.

Oh and add to my uncertainty, my flight was cancelled and I couldn't straighten things out with the travelling agency until the day before the flight was supposed to be... I was very frustrated to say the least. Therefore, even though I did go to Koh Lanta after booking a different flight a few days later, I only stayed for three weeks instead of four. HOWEVER, it turned out to be the best three weeks ever!!!

Cats are always around ^.^ The dream!

Vegan Eats in Taipei

I travelled to Taiwan back in August last year to visit my cousin who was studying there at the time. Yep, I'm blogging about something that happened many months ago. Talk about my blogging style haha

Vegan food in Taiwan is amazing! I gotta thank the following blogs Vegan Taiwan, and Bluesomeone (also Bluesomeone's facebook) for making my time there a whole lot better! I also would like to thank Rika of Vegan Miam for sending me a list of vegan places ^o^

I visited a couple of cities in Taiwan, but this post will focus on Taipei because I didn't get to see much in other places.

Now, it's time to get down to all the yummy business ;)

Vegan in Hanoi: Street food 1 - Bò Bía Ngọt & Bánh Rán

Vietnam is all about street food. Unfortunately, it's a bit limited when it comes to vegan-friendly ones. I will try to find more though which is why this post is "1".

The thing about Vietnamese street food is sometimes you don't know what they're selling because they don't have a sign telling you what is what. Tough, but what are you gonna do, eh? Hanoi and most big cities in Vietnam are hectic. You either love it or hate it, my friends :)

Two street food snacks will be introduced today. Which ones are they? Well, you gotta read on to find out ;)

Recipe: Green Fried Rice

Blogging really ain't my thing haha I just can't focus on writing :P

Anyway, let's start with something simple and fried rice is as simple as it gets. For now, please hold off the opinion about it being unhealthy because it's not necessarily true ;)

2014 Volunteer - First Stop: South Africa

The project I took part in while I was in South Africa was called "Cheetah Reintroduction", which ultimately aims to introduce cheetahs back to the wild.

While I was at the Dell Cheetah Centre, there were eight cheetahs: Shaka, Jade, Duke, Rafael, Nala, Jasmine, Tessa, and Shakira. Yes, I had the honour of working around such magnificent animals. It's a total dream-come-true situation. Even better, there were not only cheetahs there, but also three servals (Tigger, Bells, and Jingle) and one caracal (Pablo). Cool, huh?
